Any boat owner who has spent time inspecting their vessel will have, sooner or later, noticed those small fissures or “spiderwebs” appearing on the surface of the hull or deck. This is the dreaded gelcoat cracking (or crazing).

But should we be alarmed, or is it just a matter of natural aging? The answer isn’t black and white: it depends on the cause and depth of the fissure. In this post, we analyze when cracking is just a minor nuisance and when it is a warning sign of a major structural problem.

What exactly is gelcoat, and why does it crack?

Gelcoat is the outer layer of pigmented resin that protects your boat’s fiberglass laminate. It is our first line of defense against moisture, UV rays, and mechanical wear.

Cracking occurs when this layer—which is quite rigid—cannot absorb the tension or movement of the laminate beneath it. If the laminate flexes more than the gelcoat allows, the outer layer fractures.

1. Aesthetic Cracking: When the cause is superficial

Not all cracking is serious. In many cases, it is due to external factors that do not compromise the integrity of the boat:

  • UV Aging: Over the years, the sun degrades the resin, making it more brittle.
  • Excessive Thickness: If a gelcoat layer was applied too thickly during manufacturing, it becomes less flexible and is much more prone to cracking with temperature variations.
  • Superficial Impact: Minor bumps against a dock or fenders can fracture the outer layer without damaging the internal structure.

How to identify it? They are very fine, superficial cracks that often look like a spiderweb. Generally, there are no changes in the shape of the hull and no signs of delamination.

2. Structural Cracking: When the structure is “warning” you

This is where we must pay attention. If the cracking is the result of a problem within the laminate, we are facing a situation that requires care.

  • Excessive Stress: Cracks often appear in areas of high tension, such as near bulkheads, chainplates, or the mast step. If the laminate is “working” too hard, the gelcoat will break repeatedly, even if you repair it.
  • Delamination or Blisters: If you notice that the cracked area sounds hollow when tapped gently, the problem has reached the laminate. This indicates that the bond between the fiberglass layers has failed.
  • Moisture (Osmosis): If the cracking is accompanied by small bubbles or blisters, it could be the beginning of an osmosis process.

How to identify it? Deeper cracks that appear in linear (non-random) patterns, or cracks that reappear shortly after being repaired.

How to act when facing cracking?

The “Touch” Test: Clean the area and observe the depth. If the crack is so deep that you can see the fiberglass (whitish or grayish color), your boat’s waterproof protection is compromised.

Don’t just cover it up: If the cracking is structural, applying putty and repainting will only hide the problem while the structure continues to suffer. You must diagnose the root cause of the flex.

Consult an expert: If cracks appear near structural elements (engine bed, stringers, keel area), the ideal approach is to perform an inspection with a moisture meter or a professional survey before attempting a cosmetic repair.
